Houses in Ho Chi Minh City

  • 30 Colorful
Unlike Hà Nội where most new houses have a very historicist decorative design, the new houses in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) are more modernist if not just utilitarian. And while the houses in Hà Nội are most often painted ochre or vermillion, there is a much greater use of other colors in HCMC. As in Hà Nội, most houses are "tube houses" in that they are very narrow but very long. Although I haven't confirmed this yet, it is said that these lots are narrow because property taxes are based on the width of the lot at the street line. In HCMC, I guess (without confirmation yet) that many of the new houses are designed by young architects trying out new ideas, and this is very good to see. This in contrast to the usual utilitarian modernist larger buildings in HCMC. If you want to come to Vietnam,,,,

As I have been travelling down Vietnam, I have been thinking about the possible reactions of my friends and family as they come to visit Vietnam.  If they have travelled much in South America or other parts of Asia, for example, they will not be too surprised.  The tolerance of other standards of things like cleanliness is important.  So is a spirit of adventure to try new things like foods you don't recognize.

But the Our Man in Hanoi blog has said it much better than I can.  PLEASE read this posting in his blog as you think about coming to Vietnam (or other Asian countries like Cambodia or Thailand).  Click this link for his posting.

Hi Mel & Hein,

I'm enjoying your travel log very much. Mark needs to read 'Our Man in Hanoi' to prepare himself for a future trip out to Vietnam.

Mark is alseep on the couch right now after a long day at work, baseball playoffs, and monday night football. I'll have to remind him to come and check out your site.

best wishes as you find a new Vietnam, and perhaps traces of what was when you were there before.

Baby is showing no signs of coming early, so we still have about 2 more weeks until her arrival.
