In a 4 October posting, I described the bia hoi (fresh beer) places in Hanoi. Of course bia hoi is available all over in Ho Chi Minh City also.
In my earlier posting, I had said that one never sees an inebriated Vietnamese in these bia hoi places. I just hadn't looked hard enough, or I wasn't spending that much time in them anyway. My blogger friend Virtual Doug suggested that I could find inebriated bia hoi drinkers even during the lunch hour if I looked hard enough.
Sure enough, we ducked into a huge bia hoi place on short Nguyen Sieu Street in downtown HCMC behind the Opera House. It had started to rain, so we thought we might find shelter for an hour before continuing our walk.
We walked into a sea of heavy-drinking retirees. While finishing off what we thought would be just one two-liter jug of bia hoi, we were befriended by a Vietnamese gentleman with French citizenship. He is sporting the red shirt in the picture. He spends half the year in France and half in HCMC. He recharged our supply, which led to another two hours in this place, which led then to a bus ride home while sleeping it off.
Yes, Doug -- you can get inebriated on bia hoi in the middle of the day.
